AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — The Amarillo Police Department is honoring its 16 officers lost in the line of duty onNational Peace Officers Memorial Day.
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which it falls as National Police Week.
Last year, 458 officers were killed in line of duty nationwide (up from 360 in 2020), including 84 in Texas (up from 73 in 2020), according to APD.
Three Amarillo police offices died last year from complications due to COVID-19.
So far this year, 105 law enforcement officers have been killed.
honor and remember those law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as the family members, friends, and fellow officers they left behind.
